Are you about to embark upon a big paving project? Commercial paving in Calgary can be tricky, and it's also a big investment. For this reason, you want to make sure that you're doing everything by the book, so your parking pads in Calgary turn out only exactly as you want them.
At All-Star paving, we have experienced all kinds of situations over the years, and we know the right and wrong ways to repave your parking lot. Follow our advice if you want a long-lasting, neatly paved parking lot.
Do: Allow Enough Time
Asphalting a parking lot is not a job that can or should be rushed. The time each step requires will be determined by the size of the area to be paved.
It can take as little as 45 minutes or as many as several days. While it can be tempting to speed up the process, this will only result in a sub-standard asphalt installation.
Asphalt actually takes a full year to cure completely. Thankfully, this doesn't mean you can't use it at all during this time. But you will need to wait until it is dried and the curing process begins to be able to drive on it and wait the whole year to get the sealant applied.
Don't: Drive on It For 24 Hours
If you're wondering the appropriate amount of rest time before you can use your asphalt, that would be around 24 hours. If you use it before that, you run the risk of ruining your freshly paved parking pad. It's best to institute a complete ban on any vehicular activity until it's dry. As we stated above, it is all a matter of monitoring, so if after 24h you feel that your asphalt needs more time: give it more time.
Do: Take Weather Into Account
When you're paving a surface, the weather is a huge factor to consider. In Calgary, weather can be an inconvenience as winters can be harsh, filled with icy rain and snow. But asphalt doesn't do well with water during its curing phase due to its porous surface.
For this reason, it might be a good idea to do your paving when the weather forecast is at least 3 dry days, so it will be mostly cured by the time the wet weather comes back around. When you can't control the time you're paving, be sure to use an ice-melting product on your paved surface once it's done and shovel the snow away as soon as possible.
Don't: Ignore Small Cracks
When your paving job is finished, make sure to keep an eye on your asphalt for new cracks or small holes. These need to be dealt with immediately to avoid further problems down the line. You should have a paving company come and seal them with a special asphalt crack sealant.
